federated VOIP links

I was reading planet debian the other day, and I came across a post by Daniel Pollock who linked to an article about federated real time communications. This site has an article that was a little watershed moment for me. In summary it says that you shouldn't use Asterisk or FreeSwitch as the centre piece for your federated VOIP solution, but rather you should use sip proxy software like repro or Kamailio. This idea made a lot of sense to me. I've never implemented Asterisk myself yet, but I've read about it, and always thought I should do something along these lines, and this article made me realise some of the reasons I hadn't done so. Because I don't really need a PABX at home.

And even better I went on to find links to an article that gives some notes on how to get started with federated VOIP. I haven't read through all the articles on that site yet, but it looks quite easy to follow. I think it's something I should do for cromp.id.au.
